  • as an avid Michael Jackson fan: this is the best film portrayal of the events and of the Jackson family, despite a few slightly more favourable representations caused by Jermaine's input in the production of the film. The actors playing Michael deserve absolute recognition for not only their admirable accuracy and authenticity, but for the heart they put into the roles.

as a standard viewer: an enjoyable biopic paced well through the hit songs of the Jacksons, with touching, emotional performances and interesting contextual background.

  • 4 hour long mini-series and I cannot count on my fingers how many times I have seen this.

It's one of those classics that when it used to show on television you had to watch it. Or at least tune in as you went through the family room.

Would recommend. Also, would recommend to purchase it on dvd. It truly is nice to have it at hand when you feel up to re-watching.

  • Every time this came on VH1, back when I still had VH1, I had to watch at least a couple hours of it...because it is,like, 8 freakin' hours long. Or maybe it just seemed that way because VH1 would marathon the miniseries all day. Just one miniseries ALL DAY. Like Spike showing the Star Wars movies or something, except with just one miniseries instead of 6 separate movies.

Anyway, it's a pretty amazing story of how the uber-talented Jackson clan was molded and shaped by the vicious hand of Joseph Jackson. You watch this and think, 'No wonder most of them turned out to be total weirdos.' A lot of amazing performances including Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs as evil Joe and a…

  • Welcome to my review of 'The Jacksons: An American Dream'.

'The Jacksons: An American Dream' is a biopic of Joe Jackson, who worked his sons day and night until they became a major commercial success. It explores their journey from near-poverty in Gary, Indiana, to being discovered by Motown Records leader Berry Gordy, and then to fame and fortune in California.

*My favourite scenes in this televised presentation were as follows...
Joe would sit with a stick in hand while they rehearsed, ready to punish mistakes
The Jackson 5 goes from burlesque to the Apollo, performing 'Dancing In The Street', then 'Twist & Shout'
    'ABC' is a hit
Michael does the moonwalk for the first time
    Pepsi Cola sets Michael's hair…

  • Don't understand how I've gone so long not knowing this exists, but I couldn't be happier I've finally discovered it.

Mind-blowingly accurate performances down to every dance move, every gesture, every vocal expression. All alongside simple yet beautiful writing and directing.

And a special shout out to Kipp Lennon, I thought I recognised that voice.

  • Had to rewatch this for Black Music Month,it felt right. Rest in peace Michael Jackson and Joseph Jackson!

  • joe jackson wishes he was as good looking as lawrence hilton-jacobs! i understand this is a semi-whitewashed portrayal of events seeing as joe was worse than what was shown and michael was also tormented by his older brothers (who are producers on this so of course it was going to be tamed down) but this series was like a staple of my childhood. whenever it was on vh1 i HAD to sit there and watch all 4 hours of it. this just took me 3 and a half days to watch but it still holds up.

  • Good movie. It made me glad to not be a Jackson.

  • It was entertaining enough. I must say that there was a lot less child abuse and marital strife than I was expecting. Joe is definitely the villain in the story, but they present him in a somewhat sympathetic light for the most part. I wasn't expecting that. I wish they had spent more time on the adult lives of the children and on Michael's solo career. I also wish they had spent more time focusing on the girls in the family. They kind of glossed over them. Janet Jackson is barely in the movie at all. But, overall, it was an okay movie.
